Sunday, May 25, 2014, we celebrated the musical legacy of trumpeter and teacher Robert Oades, or “Mr. Oades”, as he was known to his students, at the familiar Tabaret Hall of the University of Ottawa. Bob passed away peacefully with his loving daughters by his side at the Ottawa General Hospital on April 25, 2013.
This was an opportunity for colleagues, former students, and friends to return to Tabaret Hall to honour Bob’s musical life and influence.
The celebration featured performances by
- Michael Fedyshyn, former student, and now principal trumpet
of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra - North Winds Brass Quintet
- Trumpet Geeks
- Ottawa Wind Ensemble
- alumni and friends
along with recollections from some of Bob’s students and colleagues. A full programme, recreating the 1980s style of wind ensemble programmes of the university, is available in PDF format.
Our finale was Leroy Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday, performed by 23 former trumpet students and colleagues, while being accompanied by Ottawa Wind Ensemble.
Donations to the Robert W. Oades Memorial Bursary are always welcome. This bursary was established at Bob’s request to support students of the School of Music at the University of Ottawa, where Bob taught for close to 45 years.
To donate to the Robert W. Oades Memorial Bursary, please visit the University of Ottawa donation website. Select “Robert W. Oades Memorial Bursary” in the Designation field that appears in the form.
Thank you to all event participants and donors!
